Hickory Nut Farmstead, LLC, is a licensed nursery sharing extra plants from our own restoration efforts at markets throughout the season. We also offer a “pay what you can, take what you need” self-serve plant stand at the end of our driveway that opens in mid-May until we sell out. We reopen in autumn for fall planting (a great way for gardeners to get a jump start on the next season!).

NLN is a wholesale/retail nursery that produces over 300 species of plants native to the Great Lakes Region. In 2021, the nursery was relocated from Ypsilanti to a 60-acre farm in Manchester in order to scale operations to meet demand. At the new location, we have already began the process of converting 30 acres of farmland into a prairie restoration that will not only improve habitat but also serve as a seed bank for plant production. While typically closed to the public, plants can be ordered for pick-up or shipping via our online store, phone, or email. We will be hosting a number of public open houses throughout the season so please be sure to check the calendar posted on our website.

Since 1996, we have specialized in growing plants native to Michigan, from Michigan genotypes. We grow trees, shrubs, grasses, wildflowers, and emergent wetland species typical of Michigan woodlands, wetlands and prairies. It is our objective to propagate nursery stock with enough genetic diversity to create self-sustaining populations. Therefore the majority of our plants are grown from wild seed stock. This is what we mean when we say our plants are “borne to be wild.” We keep track of when and where the seeds or cuttings were collected and where and how they were grown and handled.  This information can be supplied upon request.

Ecotypes: prairie, wet-mesic, wetlands, emergent shade, trees and shrubs

Windy Rock Farm & Nursery is a fully retail (open to the public) specialty nursery. Our range of offerings and scale are a perfect fit for homeowners interested in planting a pollinator/butterfly garden, rain-garden, shade garden, etc., and for small-scale landscapers whose clients desire native plant species with pollinator benefit. We have no minimum purchase amount and do not require pre-orders or an appointment. Though we are generally open 9-6, six days a week, throughout the growing season, calling ahead to make sure we are not off-farm at a plant event is a good idea.
